Operating a Viable Farm Business

Breaking the Habit: How Adapting to Changing Environments with Innovative Techniques Could Save Our Farms

  • Liz Gillispie, Badger Mountain Vineyard
  • This lecture presentation with some audience interaction aims to provide attendees with practical solutions to challenges we’ve faced in our vineyard over the years. I will discuss how our vineyard started and why we chose some of the management practices we did at the time. Next, I will bridge into how we are working towards adapting those practices to a more sustainable and regenerative approach to preserve our soil and increase long term soil and grape quality and struggles we face. Lastly, I will touch upon how we are using innovative practices together with research and collaboration to adapt to a climate we often don’t talk about – urban development. The lecture approach will help layout how we are learning and adapting in an organized format attendees can understand. Additionally, I will weave in audience interaction by engaging them with questions focused on what habits they tend to form, what struggles they face, and what fears they have with changing their techniques.

Sustainable Farm Finance: Budgeting for Success

  • Grant Jones, Hungry Hollow Farm
  • Your farm is not sustainable unless it's financially sustainable. In this interactive workshop, we'll dive deep into the finances of a real Washington farm and lay the foundation for your own farm's 5-year operating budget.
