Lessons Learned from Establishing a Producer-Owned Food Hub Cooperative in Southwest WA

  • Stephen Bramwell, Washington State University
  • This presentation will report on a USDA-funded Local Food Promotion Program grant project to open new markets for regional food producers by planning the development of aggregation, sales, and distribution infrastructure and services. Topics to be covered include formation of a chartered producer committee, development of operational plans, and training for producers and buyers to facilitate participation in a farmer-owned, cooperative food hub. Approaches to education and outreach to buyers and sellers, market and production data collection, and development of business and marketing plans will be discussed, including the design and launch of a pilot aggregation-distribution network in response to the need for food aid distribution. Challenges, approaches, “aha”, and “uh oh” moments will be shared.
