Community Will Build 37 Gardens in South Park Area on May 16

May 14, 2015

South Park residents and urban farming advocates are uniting forces to construct 37 garden beds for low income families in Seattle’s South Park neighborhood on Saturday, May 16. The goal is to make fresh food more accessible while reducing water pollution associated with pesticide and synthetic fertilizer use along the Duwamish River industrial corridor. South Park, a diverse neighborhood with many low income families, is considered a food desert with limited access to fresh food.

This festive garden building event is called Spring Into Bed. Volunteers and community organizers will gather at Marra Farm at 9 a.m. and then head out to 16 sites to build gardens with participation from local families, volunteers and organizations. South Park resident Christine Makela received a King County Green Grant and has partnered with Seattle Tilth’s Just Garden program to make this project possible.
Building Gardens is Fun!
Spring Into Bed is creating a sense of community empowerment in South Park. In a collaborative spirit, some homeowners are sharing their yards with families who
do not own their own homes. Over 100 volunteers and garden recipients will be working together to build gardens. After the gardens are built, everyone involved will gather to celebrate and share a meal.

Gardeners participate in organic gardening workshops and ongoing support offered by the Garden Hotline, a program managed by Seattle Tilth and sponsored by the City of Seattle and King County, to help ensure their success growing a bountiful harvest without the use of chemicals. Gardens are designed to reduce storm water runoff at the locations where they’re installed.

9 a.m. Meet at Marra Farm, 9026 4th Ave S, Seattle, WA 98108. Get directions.
10 a.m. Build gardens at various locations
1 p.m. Celebrate with a light lunch at Marra Farm!
3 p.m. Event ends

About 40 more volunteers are still needed to make this event a success -- join in for wheelbarrows of fun! Sign up to volunteer.

Seattle Tilth’s Just Garden program builds gardens monthly for low income families and each spring and hosts a large scale garden building event. On June 20, gardens will be built in Kent and on July 18, Renton will be the location for building gardens.
