Go Urban Farm Touring!

Visitors Invited to Explore Urban Farms Across Seattle on July 16

Jun 24, 2016

Seattle Tilth’s 17th annual Chicken Coop and Urban Farm Tour is a self-guided “choose your own adventure” experience. Visitors who go on the tour can explore some of Seattle's most interesting residential urban farms throughout the city on Saturday, July 16, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Many of these urban farms will surprise and amaze visitors. Tucked behind regular urban houses that might look ordinary from the front, you can discover urban livestock, impressive chicken coops, bountiful organic gardens, food forests, compost systems, wildlife friendly gardens, rain water collection, solar energy systems, hugelkultur beds, rain gardens, permaculture design and fanciful garden art. Urban livestock on the tour will include wildly diverse chicken varieties -- chosen for beauty, personality, egg laying or meat. Visitors can also see mini dairy goats, ducks, rabbits, pigs, mason bees and honey bees.
Many of the hosts have creative names for their sites including Happy Cloud Farm, Slug Race, Webfoot Farm and City Art Farm. Each of our hosts have vast knowledge about their urban farms and are happy to share what they’ve learned.
Seattle Tilth judges will choose awards in the following categories: Community Star, Innovation Station, Garden to the Max and Animal House. Tour attendees will vote for the People’s Choice Award online after the event.

Seattle Tilth organized the first U.S. coop tour in Seattle in 2000. Now there are dozens across the country from Boston, to Atlanta, Chicago, Silicon Valley and many places in between. Seattle Tilth started the event as a way to interest people in keeping chickens as a source of fresh eggs, even in an urban setting, and the tradition continues.

Tickets can be purchased online for $15, $8 for kids, with discounts for groups, Seattle Tilth members and bicyclists. Tickets can also be purchased in person at Portage Bay Grange and at Seattle Farm Co-op.

See you on the tour July 16!
